Language, Literacy and Reading
We recognise the fundamental role that language, literacy and reading play in children's success.
Children arrive at school with different experiences, strengths and starting points. We therefore take a proactive approach to developing language and vocabulary, building reading fluency and ensuring every child can access the wider curriculum.
Language, literacy and reading are not confined to English lessons. They are developed deliberately across the curriculum, helping children to communicate effectively, acquire knowledge and engage confidently with the world around them.
Communication and Language
Communication and language development begins from a child's very first days at Grampian.
Children's language skills are monitored carefully, helping us identify strengths, provide personalised support and target interventions where required.
Through purposeful talk, high-quality interactions and a language-rich environment, children develop:

Phonics and Early Reading
We believe that every child can become a confident reader.
To support this, we deliver the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme. Through daily phonics teaching, carefully matched reading books and regular assessment, children develop the knowledge and skills needed to read with increasing fluency and confidence.
Reading routines begin from the very earliest stages of school. Even before children can decode text independently, carefully chosen wordless books help establish positive reading habits, build language and encourage discussion around stories and illustrations.
When children need additional support, targeted intervention helps them catch up quickly and continue to make progress as readers.
Reading at the Heart of the Curriculum
Reading sits at the heart of life at Grampian.
We believe that reading opens doors to knowledge, opportunity and aspiration.
Our English curriculum is supported through Literacy Tree, which provides high-quality texts that inspire a love of reading and writing whilst developing children's vocabulary, comprehension and wider understanding of the curriculum.

Through our Literacy Tree curriculum and carefully sequenced teaching, children develop:

By securing these foundations, children gain the confidence and fluency needed to communicate effectively through writing.
Developing Young Mathematicians
Mathematics foundations begin in the Early Years.
Children develop secure number sense through the NCETM Mastering Number programme, which helps them build fluency and confidence with number from the very beginning of their learning journey.
Alongside number development, children engage in rich mathematical experiences that develop spatial reasoning, pattern, shape, measure and problem-solving skills.
As children move through school, mathematics teaching builds upon these foundations through carefully sequenced learning that develops fluency, reasoning and problem-solving.
Where appropriate, high-quality resources, including Oak National Academy materials, support teaching and help ensure consistency and progression in learning.
