Mental Health and Wellbeing

Helping Every Child Flourish

At Grampian Primary School, we believe that children learn best when they feel happy, safe and supported.

Mental health and wellbeing are an important part of every child's development. Just as we care for children's physical health, we also recognise the importance of supporting their emotional wellbeing, confidence and resilience.

Our mission is to unlock positive futures, and we know that helping children develop positive mental health is a vital part of preparing them for life beyond primary school.

What Do We Mean by Mental Health and Wellbeing?

Everyone has mental health, just as everyone has physical health.

Children's mental health and wellbeing can influence how they:

  • Think and learn
  • Manage emotions
  • Build friendships
  • Cope with challenges
  • Develop confidence and self-esteem
  • Engage with school life

Most children will experience worries, anxieties or difficulties at some point in their lives. These experiences are a normal part of growing up and we are committed to ensuring that children feel listened to and supported when they need help.

Our Approach

At Grampian, we take a whole-school approach to promoting positive wellbeing.

We aim to create an environment where children feel:

  • Safe
  • Valued
  • Included
  • Respected
  • Confident to ask for help

Wellbeing is supported throughout school life through:

  • Positive relationships with trusted adults
  • Our PSHE curriculum
  • Opportunities to discuss feelings and emotions
  • Pastoral support
  • Inclusive practices
  • Strong home-school partnerships
  • Celebration of effort, achievement and personal growth

Supporting Children

Children may need additional support at different times for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Friendship difficulties
  • Worries or anxiety
  • Bereavement or loss
  • Family changes
  • Low self-esteem
  • Emotional regulation difficulties
  • Attendance concerns
  • Transitions and change

When concerns arise, we work closely with children, families and external professionals to identify appropriate support.

Supporting Families

We recognise that family life can sometimes be challenging and that parents and carers may also need advice or support.

Our Inclusion Team can:

  • Listen and offer guidance
  • Signpost families to local services
  • Support referrals to external agencies
  • Help families access Early Help support
  • Work with children experiencing emotional difficulties

If you are worried about your child, please contact a member of the Inclusion Team. Early conversations can often make a significant difference.

Building Resilience

We want our children to develop the skills they need to navigate life's ups and downs.

Throughout their time at Grampian, children are encouraged to:

  • Talk about their feelings
  • Ask for help when they need it
  • Show kindness and empathy
  • Develop positive friendships
  • Learn from mistakes
  • Build confidence and independence

These skills help children not only during their primary years, but also as they move on to secondary school and beyond.
