Music at GPA

Developing Musicians, Performers and Creative Thinkers

At Grampian Primary Academy, we believe that music is an essential part of a broad and ambitious education. Music enables children to express themselves creatively, work collaboratively and develop confidence through performance.

Through high-quality teaching, specialist support and a range of enrichment opportunities, we ensure children experience both the joy of music-making and the discipline of developing musical knowledge and skills.

Rooted in our mission of Unlocking Positive Futures, our music provision aims to inspire a lifelong appreciation of music whilst helping children develop confidence, aspiration and creativity.

Our Music Curriculum

Music is taught by our specialist music teacher and follows a carefully sequenced curriculum that develops children's understanding of:

  • Listening and appraising
  • Singing
  • Performing
  • Composition
  • Musical notation
  • Musical genres and traditions

Children develop both practical musicianship and an appreciation of music from different cultures, periods and styles.

Learning Through Performance

We believe that music should be experienced as well as studied.

Children have regular opportunities to perform, both within school and for wider audiences, helping them develop confidence, resilience and pride in their achievements.

Performance opportunities include:

  • Class assemblies
  • Seasonal celebrations
  • School concerts
  • Community performances
  • Choir performances

Every Child as a Musician

Through our partnership with the Derbyshire Music Partnership, all children have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument as part of their primary education.

These experiences help children develop musical skills, perseverance and self-confidence whilst introducing them to the enjoyment of creating music together.

Additional Music Opportunities

Children can further develop their musical interests through a range of enrichment opportunities.

Rocksteady

Through our partnership with Rocksteady, children can learn:

  • Electric guitar
  • Bass guitar
  • Drums
  • Keyboard
  • Vocals

and experience being part of a band.

Choir

Our school choir provides opportunities for children who enjoy singing to perform, develop their vocal skills and represent the school at events throughout the year.

Music Development Plan

Further information about music provision, curriculum development and enrichment opportunities can be found in our Music Development Plan at the bottom of this page.

Music For Life

Music enriches children's lives. Through performing, listening, creating and working together, children develop confidence, creativity and self-expression. Whether learning an instrument, singing in a choir or performing to an audience, we want every child to experience the joy of music and develop memories and skills that will stay with them long after they leave Grampian.
